first_imgOcean City Sailing Foundation offers classes beginning June 25, to teach kids and adults how to become sailors.(Courtesy Ocean City Sailing Foundation) By Maddy VitaleAll you need is a towel, a water bottle and a love of the water to start your journey to become a sailor.Classes begin June 25 and run through Aug. 25 at the Ocean City Sailing Foundation at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave., where top instructors teach children and adults alike how to navigate the bays, the ocean and develop mariner skills that will last a lifetime.“We teach people ages eight to 80-plus,” said Director of the Ocean City Sailing Foundation Doug Mroz. “The great thing is, no experience is necessary.”Mroz, 33, of Ocean City, grew up sailing and racing, competing locally, regionally and nationally.Ocean City Sailing Foundation Director Doug Mroz gets some help with the mast from instructors and sisters Kailin Burns Cohen (left) and Reilly Burns Cohen. The foundation is a non-profit organization in existence since 2007. Mroz has been the director for three years, and at the foundation for five.Over the years, the program has grown, thanks to Mroz and his team. During a typical summer, the classes fill up to anywhere from 200 to 220 students.“The great thing is there is no experience necessary,” Mroz explained. The foundation offers a variety of boats to choose from, ranging from 6 feet to 18 feet, depending on a student’s interest and skill level.Mroz, who teaches business and special education at Cedar Creek High School in Egg Harbor City and is the assistant crew coach there, said he loves teaching sailing classes. He also thinks he’s found the right recipe to keep sailing students interested, most likely a skill he learned as a school teacher.Children forge friendships and come back for classes year after year. (Courtesy Ocean City Sailing Foundation)“You have to make sailing fun for kids to continue with it,” he said. “We really have tried to do that. We play a lot of games. Games and swimming have to be involved to make it fun.”In a typical class week, students are introduced to the boats and the water. They have lessons on both land and the water, do warmup activities and games.“Some kids are sailing on their first day,” Mroz noted.Sometimes a student gets to go out alone in a boat, depending on his or her skill level and experience and the weather conditions.Mroz stressed that in sailing, everything is weather dependent. Conditions are studied throughout the day.“Safety is our number one priority,” he said. “We go over proper boat handling skills and safety procedures with the staff and students.”Reilly and Kailin Burns Cohen, sisters and instructors, get some help from Pat Leonardo, a former director of the sailing foundation.Mroz added that the staff is great. In addition to Mroz, there are five instructors. There is also someone he considers a true asset, Pat Leonardo, of Ocean View. He was the director before Mroz.“I called him and asked him to come back to help out,” Mroz said.John Parker, former president of the Ocean City Sailing Foundation, said Mroz is doing a “super job” as director.“He continues to do what Pat (Leonardo) started. Doug has continued to grow this program on the junior side and the adults side,” Parker said. “It is amazing how many adults come and see how their kids are doing and say, ‘I used to sail as a kid. I’d like some lessons.’”Leonardo was helping Mroz and sisters Kailin and Reilly Burns Cohen, who are instructors, get the boats ready Tuesday.Adults also enjoy classes at the Ocean City Sailing Foundation. (Courtesy Ocean City Sailing Foundation)“It’s a wonderful sport for all kinds of reasons and for all ages,” Leonardo said. “You get to be out on the water. You see all different aspects of sailing.”He said it is amazing to see how sailing continues to grow in popularity and how the classes grow. The Burns Cohen sisters are from Monmouth County but live in Ocean City in the summers. They learned how to sail at around eight years old, at the Ocean City Yacht Club. They said they enjoy teaching children how to sail and every year they see kids coming back.“We play a lot of games with the kids on the water,” Kailin said, of keeping children interested in sailing. “We play tag where we throw balls into the boats and the kids have to get them in the other boats.”Reilly Burns Cohen ,19, (left) and her sister Kailin Burns Cohen, 18, have been sailing since they were very young.Reilly said it is a lot of fun teaching kids how to sail, especially the ones who have never been on the bay before.“The first day they get here they get a swim test,” she said. “They get in the water and then we go from there.”Like Mroz and Leonardo, the sisters said some of the students are so good they get out on the bay their first day.But first, they are taught about steering, safety and many other aspects of sailing.Reilly added, “It’s always interesting to see how kids want to learn more and how they make friends.”Lessons are held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.Pricing and packages can be viewed at www.ocnjsailingfoundation.org or call (609) 418-3356.Ocean City Sailing Foundation Director Doug Mroz surveys the waters Tuesday morning.last_img read more

5 easy mistakes to make and how to avoid making them

first_imgWe all make mistakes – it is part of being human. However, it is how we recognize and handle our errors that can separate good leaders from really great leaders.Marcel Schwantes, principal and founder of Leadership From the Core, writes in a recent Inc.com post that there are a “few prevalent leadership mistakes that even the best and smartest leaders tend to make,” including:– The mistake of not giving employees a listening ear. Those leaders that really listen to their employees build trust and make them feel a part of the culture and workplace “family.”– The mistake of not giving employees enough information. It is important to keep our employees in the loop when there are changes happening. This will help overall morale – even if the changes taking place aren’t the best news.– The mistake of not coaching their employees. Just like top athletes have a coach, employees should have good managers. continue reading » 17SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Autopsy set for mother of rapper Kanye West

first_imgWest was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in her Playa del Rey home. A Centinela Hospital spokesperson told “Access Hollywood” that West “was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest” when she arrived at the hospital. “They tried to revive her and were unsuccessful.” The doctor who performed the surgery, plastic surgeon Dr. Jan Adams, told TMZ that he did nothing wrong. He said the death was unforeseen and could have been caused by a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or massive vomiting. As for Aboolian’s assertion that he refused to conduct the surgery because of a medical condition that West had, Adams said “(Aboolian) is sleazy and manipulating the truth to elevate his own importance.” Donda West spent about 30 years at Chicago State University, rising to English Department head, but left teaching to manage her son’s career. She appeared on “Oprah” and other shows to talk about her life, raising her son and teen literacy. Over the past year, she was head of the Kanye West Foundation, which is aimed at keeping inner-city youths in school. She also recently published a book, “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star.” The rapper professed a close relationship with his mother and dedicated a song to her: “Hey Mama.” West raised her son alone after her husband left when Kanye was 3. In a statement, the rapper thanked everyone for the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country. “After working in higher education for 31 years, Dr. Donda West and Kanye West co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with the mission of helping to combat the severe dropout problem in high schools across the country,” according to the statement. “The first and signature initiative of the Kanye West Foundation is Loop Dreams,” the statement continued. “Designed to capitalize on students existing interest in hip-hop, Loop Dreams challenges students to learn more about what’s behind hip-hop culture in order to help them develop skills, express themselves creatively and be empowered.” In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made in Donde West’s name to the Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute. Donations can be made by visiting the Foundation’s Web site, www.KanyeWestFoundation.org or by mail at Kanye West Foundation, 8560 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Andre Aboolian, told “Access Hollywood” he refused to perform the surgery on West just weeks before her death because of a pre-existing medical condition. “She was interested in some cosmetic procedures, and we had discussed that in order for her to go through with the procedures, which she was a good candidate for, she needed what’s called a medical clearance, which just about anybody over the age of 40 is required to have,” he said. “Because of Donda’s age, she was required to get some cardiac clearance to make sure her heart is in good shape to go through for the surgery.” He said that although she was a “good candidate” for the surgery, “she had a condition that was of concern.” He did not reveal the specifics of the condition, citing patient confidentiality. An autopsy scheduled for today in Los Angeles could determine whether the mother of rap star Kanye West died of complications from cosmetic surgery. Donda West, 58, was pronounced dead at 8:49 p.m. Saturday at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center. The autopsy will include an inquiry into whether she died from “possible complications of surgery,” said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Department of the Coroner. The celebrity justice Web site TMZ.com reported that West underwent a “combined procedure” that included a breast reduction and tummy tuck. last_img read more

Chelsea favourites to get the win Sarri needs

first_imgMaurizio Sarri’s message ahead of the Europa League final couldn’t be clearer: back me or sack me.Chelsea are favourites to win Wednesday’s all-London showdown with Arsenal – and ending the season with a trophy would boost Sarri’s chances of being kept on as Blues boss.Since the final was confirmed the opening odds to win the Europa League final have remained constant since the matchup was first set.Chelsea remains a 5/7 favourite, while Arsenal are 11/10 to lift the trophy. If you are looking not just for variety when it comes to Europa League odds, but also a reputable sportsbook that pays out instantly, look no further than this list here. We expected Arsenal to be bet down as matchday approaches. However, after the team confirmed Armenian national Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be omitted from the line-up due to safety concerns in Baku, the odds are more likely to move slightly in Chelsea’s favour over the next week. And while a Chelsea win might stand in Sarri’s favour, the Italian – who has led the club back to the Champions League via a third-placed finish – has clearly been irritated suggestions his future hinges on Wednesday’s game.He said: “If the situation is like this, I want to go immediately because you cannot have 10 months of work and then I have to play everything in 90 minutes.“It’s not right. You are happy with my work or you are not happy.”And Sarri believes the Chelsea hierarchy should be happy with his work.He will meet them after the final and plans to push for a quick decision on his future.Juventus and Roma are reported to be ready to appoint him if he leaves Stamford Bridge.“My future is Wednesday. I need to think only of the final at this moment,” he said.“I have two years of my contract left, so I have had no contact with other clubs at the moment.“I have to speak with my club first of all after the final. I want to know if they’re happy with me or not.“I can only work. I can only try to improve my team. I can only try to win more matches. I don’t know what more to do.“In my opinion we had a very good season. Of course we have to do more, we need to improve more.“I am very happy to stay in the Premier League. Chelsea is one of the most important clubs in the Premier League, so I am really very happy.“But we have to discuss the situation. It’s normal after every season to discuss with a club.” Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebookby Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksRecommended for youAspireAbove.comRemember Pauley Perrette? Pork producers set national legislative priorities

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The National Pork Producers Council wrapped up its Spring Legislative Action Conference. More than 100 pork producers from across the United States gathered in Washington this week to meet with their representatives in Congress to discuss solutions for trade, animal disease preparedness and agriculture’s labor shortage.“Lifting metal tariffs on Mexico and restoring zero-tariff access for U.S. pork in our largest export market is our number one priority,” said David Herring, a pork producer from Lillington, North Carolina and president of the National Pork Producers Council. “Restricted access to Mexico has placed a severe financial strain on our farmers for more than a year. We asked our representatives to do all they can to push for an end to this and other trade disputes, including China, that are hurting our export-dependent farmers.”NPPC members also urged members of Congress to advocate for the quick completion of a trade deal with Japan at a time when new trade agreements Japan has formed with other countries are threatening U.S. pork market share in its largest value market. Pork producers also urged their representative to vote to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement to secure long-term zero-tariff pork trade in North America.Producers also discussed two solutions to mitigate the risk of animal disease in the United States: 1) appropriations funding for 600 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture inspectors to further strengthen defenses against African swine fever (ASF) and other animal diseases and 2) to sign a letter of support that calls for the USDA to implement the Farm Bill as intended, including development of a Foot-and-Mouth Disease vaccine bank.“Prevention is our best defense against an animal disease like African swine fever for which no vaccine exists,” said Herring. “For a disease like Foot-and-Mouth disease, which would also close U.S. pork’s export markets, prevention is also critical. Should an outbreak occur, a vaccine bank will allow us to quickly contain the disease. A vaccine back is critical.”NPPC members also asked members of Congress to address U.S. agriculture’s labor shortage challenge by reforming the H-2A visa program to include year-round agricultural workers and asked for support to place for oversight of this program with the USDA.last_img read more

Tell Your Boss What You Really Think On The Web

first_imgRelated Posts adam popescu Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting If you could say anything to your boss without fear of reprisal, would you? More to the point, should you? Would it make the world a better place? The founder of an anonymous-email service designed to help employees express themselves to their employers believes the answer is yes.The site is called Tell Your Boss Anything, and it lets you send anonymous messages to your boss. Sounds like a joke, right? Or maybe just a bad idea? Well, Tom Williams, the Canadian founder of the site, is serious. The service is real. And it helps underlings and overlords communicate by removing their identities from the equation, he says. Here’s how it works: The service is free to use for employees. But managers must pay $20 a month to have unlimited communication with their team (the first message is free to reply to). The site filters for vulgarity and other offensive comments. (Less than 20 percent of sent messages have been rejected, he says, an outcome that can get the sender booted.) Your superior can see the message, but not your identity. That way, you can give honest feedback, and the people upstairs can’t punish you for being honest. The service encourages them to respond and (hopefully) address the problem. The site has been live for a month, and while Williams won’t divulge numbers, he says the site is doing exactly what he envisioned. “Given the high number of responses and the number of issues marked ‘resolved’ or ‘improved’ by employees, it appears as though the service has been used primarily as intended,” Williams said.  A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…center_img Tags:#startups#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Torrential rain in Nepal caused Bihar floods: Nitish

first_imgUnusually torrential rainfall in catchment areas in Nepal and subsequent massive discharge of water in rivers led to flash floods in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told the State Assembly on Tuesday. A total of 25.72 lakh people have been affected by the natural calamity so far, he said.In a statement, Mr. Kumar said floods normally struck north Bihar in August or , sometimes, in September, but this time they came a month earlier primarily because of unusually heavy rainfall in the Terai region of the neighbouring country. For the last three-four days, the Terai region of Nepal has been lashed by rainfalls ranging between 280-300 mm, which was many times higher than the 50 mm considered normal for the area , he said.last_img

Watch | All about Ladakh

first_imgOn August 5, the Central Government announced that a Union Territory of Ladakh is to be created by carving out the region from the State of Jammu and Kashmir. This new Union Territory is set to come into existence on October 31. The Ladakh region is ecologically and culturally unique. It has a topography that is very different from the rest of India, and is home to enormous mineral reserves. The extremely fragile cold desert ecosystem of the regions has meant that its inhabitants have a very adaptive lifestyle. The population of around 3 lakh is spread sparsely over an area of about 60 thousand square kilometers. The people are primarily Buddhists, and their culture is closely tied to the Tibetan region. And like the Tibetans, the Ladakhi cuisine is know for momos and thukpa. The primary language of the region is Bhoti, and Ladakhi culture has a rich oral tradition of of songs and poems. The region was settled by tribes and races like the Mons and the Dards and historical mentions of the region go back as early as the third century BC and the puranas. In the 1830s the Dogra army of Jammu laid siege on Ladakh and brought it under Maharaja Gulab Singh’s rule. Ladakh became a part of India when Jammu and Kashmir acceded to the union in 1947.During the 1962 war, China took control of a part of the region that is known as Aksai Chin. Since then, India and China have signed agreements to respect the Line of Actual Control that separates Aksai Chin from Jammu and Kashmir. In 2002, all the political parties in Ladakh had merged to form the Ladakh Union Territory Front in demand of Union Territory status because of its religious and cultural differences with Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh’s Member of Parliament, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP, said that Ladakh felt stifled by J&K’s decision-making apparatus, which was centred in Srinagar. Ladakh celebrated Independence Day, 2019, with fervour with Mr. Namgyal saying the region has got “independence from Kashmir”.The parliamentarian, whose speech in the Lok Sabha after the abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir drew praises, was seen dancing and playing the drums along with locals.Mr. Namgyal hoisted the national flag at the local BJP office along with party national general secretary Ram Madhav.last_img read more

Sena, BJP delay alliance announcement yet again

first_imgThe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena on Tuesday postponed a scheduled press conference where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray were to announce their alliance for the Assembly elections, just a day after miscommunication within the Opposition caused the Nationalist Congress Party to cancel the release of its manifesto.State BJP president Chandrakant Patil, when asked about the press conference being called off, refused to comment, but said the alliance talks are in the final stage. “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Uddhav Thackeray are finalising the [seat-sharing arrangement]. They are also discussing it with BJP national president Amit Shah. I have thus decided not to make any further comments on the issue,” Mr. Patil said at a press conference at the party headquarters in Mumbai. ‘Announcement soon’On Monday evening, BJP leaders had informed media persons that the alliance would be announced on Tuesday. However, later in the night, it emerged that no such announcement was scheduled. Mr Patil said, “I cannot predict [when it will happen]. All I can say is that the alliance will be announced soon.”Mr. Fadnavis and Mr. Thackeray will be together in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday to address the Mathadi Kamgar Melava (a gathering of Mathadi workers) and are likely to have lunch at MLC Narendra Patil’s residence. When asked if former chief minister and Maharashtra Swabhiman Party founder Narayan Rane would be joining the BJP, Mr. Patil said the decision will be taken after the alliance is announced. “ Once [Mr. Fadnavis and Mr. Thackeray] agree on a seat-sharing formula, a decision regarding Rane’s induction into the BJP will be finalised,” he said.Mr. Patil’s statement indicates that all may not be well within the saffron alliance, especially when the Opposition has already finalised its seat-sharing arrangement and is finalising names of candidates. ‘BJP needs to introspect’Mr. Fadnavis had said on Monday that the official announcement of the seat-sharing deal would be made at the right time, while Sena leader Sanjay Raut had claimed the coming 24 hours were crucial for the alliance. On Tuesday, Mr. Raut said the BJP needs to introspect if it cannot honour its commitments, and that the seat-sharing formula with the BJP had been decided before the Lok Sabha elections. He said the party’s position would have been different had it decided to sit in the opposition.Mr. Patil said, “There was no point in raising this issue now. The Sena has been with us during the entire tenure.”last_img read more
