DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.1600968 (Phys.org)—A pair of researchers at Cornell University has created an aluminum-based electrochemical cell that captures and sequesters carbon emissions while simultaneously generating a large amount of electricity. In their paper published in the journal Science Advances, Wajdi Al Sadat and Lynden Archer describe the cell, how it works and why they believe it is better than other carbon-capturing cells that have been developed to date. Human beings have been pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in large amounts since the advent of the industrial age, leading to global warming. Scientists have been working overtime to figure out a way to reduce the amounts of the gas that we emit, but while there have been great improvements, far too much is still going into the air. Meanwhile, other scientists are taking a different approach—they are looking for ways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in an economically feasible way. In this new effort, the researchers at Cornell report on cell technology they developed that differs significantly from the approach used by others.To create a cell that removes carbon dioxide, researchers have tried using magnesium, lithium or sodium as an anode—the results to date have worked to some extent, but they produce carbonates, which are not very useful. To get around that problem, the researchers instead used aluminum foil to make the anode—the cathode was made of stainless steel mesh and an ionic liquid with some aluminum chloride salt in it was used as the electrolyte.In testing their cell, the duo found that it was capable of generating up to 13 ampere-hours for every gram of carbon that it captured. They point out that it did so without the need for any sort of catalyst and that it was done at room temperature. In addition, the output from the system consisted of aluminum oxalate, which they noted can be used to make oxalic acid, a material that is commonly used in several industries, which means it could be easily sold.The researchers acknowledge that their cell has one serious drawback at the moment—it won’t work if water is present in the mix of gasses it pulls in, a situation that would exist in most real-world locations. These technologies are also essential for longer-term use of fossil fuels while reducing the associated carbon footprint. We demonstrate an O2-assisted Al/CO2 electrochemical cell as a new approach to sequester CO2 emissions and, at the same time, to generate substantial amounts of electrical energy. We report on the fundamental principles that guide operations of these cells using multiple intrusive electrochemical and physical analytical methods, including chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and coupled thermogravimetric analysis–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. On this basis, we demonstrate that an electrochemical cell that uses metallic aluminum as anode and a carbon dioxide/oxygen gas mixture as the active material in the cathode provides a path toward electrochemical generation of a valuable (C2) species and electrical energy. Specifically, we show that the cell first reduces O2 at the cathode to form superoxide intermediates. Chemical reaction of the superoxide with CO2 sequesters the CO2 in the form of aluminum oxalate, Al2(C2O4)3, as the dominant product. On the basis of an analysis of the overall CO2 footprint, which considers emissions associated with the production of the aluminum anode and the CO2 captured/abated by the Al/CO2-O2 electrochemical cell, we conclude that the proposed process offers an important strategy for net reduction of CO2 emissions.

Kolkata: State Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim, along with state Forest minister Binay Krishna Barman inaugurated the enclosure for elephants in Alipore Zoo after a major facelift.The new home for the pachyderms spans over 12,000 square metre which is nearly ten times the size of the old enclosure that only had a 1,991 square metre area.”We selected Sunday for the inauguration because today is World Elephant Day. The widening of the space for the jumbos had become imperative with the Central Zoo Authority prodding the zoo authorities for increasing the space for free movement of the animals,” said state Forest minister Binay Krishna Barman.Rani and Tithi- the two elephants are a major attraction in the zoo, particularly for children.”The waterbody at the front portion of the enclosure has been cleaned and beautified. Natural grass has been laid and shower has been fitted for bathing of the elephants. The trees inside the new enclosure – Aswattha, Neem, Deodar and Krishnachura – are surrounded by small brick walls so that the elephants can’t uproot them,” Zoo director Asis Kumar Samanta said, adding that the animals love open space to roam around and enjoy nature.The cost for expanding the enclosure has been Rs 1.72 crore. It may be mentioned that in 2009, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) had banned elephants in zoos but had made an exception for Alipore zoo and had told the state Forest department that they could keep two elephants at the most, by expanding the enclosure.”We are happy that the CZA has allowed us to keep elephants in Alipore Zoo. We have elephants here since its inception and the animal is associated with our sentiment,” Barman said. The zoo authorities were again prodded by CZA in 2015-16 and there was apprehension that the zoo will lose the jumbos, being unable to meet the CZA guidelines for keeping the elephants.After a number of sleepless nights, the zoo authorities, in consultation with experts, chalked out a comprehensive plan for widening of the elephant enclosure.The enclosures for animals like leopard, hyena and jackal needed to be shifted to another place, to broaden the area of the jumbos.The old elephant enclosure, with a moat, a shed and trees, was inaugurated in 1999 by the then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu. Before that, elephants used to remain chained in an enclosure one-tenth the size of the current one.
July 12, 2012 Hackers are constantly breaking into innocent websites and using them to infect visitors with malware, lure them to dodgy sites and infiltrate databases to grab sensitive customer information. But you can avoid trouble — or eliminate it quickly — by taking some relatively simple steps.Each day, Google identifies 9,500 malware-infected websites, about 4,000 of which are legitimate sites compromised by hackers. About half of these victims learn they’ve been hacked when they see the same browser and search-engine danger warnings their customers see, a sign they’ve been blacklisted, according to a survey by StopBadware, a nonprofit anti-malware organization in Cambridge, Mass. Some 45 percent are notified of the problem by one of their technology providers — a much better scenario.Small businesses are especially vulnerable to hacking because they usually lack the technology expertise and site security that larger companies have. They also suffer more if their lack of expertise slows repairs and their ability to get back to work. Business owners can lose significant online traffic and sales if their site lands on blacklists operated by Google and other search engines.Take MetroSeeker.com, an Austin, Texas-based startup that offers online guides to cities’ “personalities,” for instance. The site was down for a week in early June after hackers broke in and pointed all its links to sites selling Viagra. Exactly how hackers got in wasn’t clear, so CEO Ysmay Gray tackled every entry point. Stay out of the line of fire by using the latest versions of software and applying security patches promptly.”Sites that get infected and clean up, but don’t fix the vulnerability in their software, just get re-infected,” says Lucas Ballard, a software engineer with Google’s Safe Browsing team. Congreave changed his password and began using CuteFTP for more secure file management.Register with Google’s Webmaster Tools.Getting on Google’s blacklist, which is used by the search site and the Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers, can reduce traffic to your site. By registering with Webmaster Tools, you can receive notifications of malware infections immediately, sometimes before blacklisting occurs, so you can get rid of them faster. The service also provides details about the precise problem Google is seeing. That can speed your clean up and your return to Google’s good graces.Get expert help.Companies that are heavily dependent on their websites may want to hire a firm that provides alerts if they get on a blacklist, monitoring for malicious activity, scanning for security vulnerabilities or help with repairs after a hack.
