Matthew James Thomas Looks Back on His Pippin Journey

first_imgIn the corporate world, employees leaving a job are asked to sit through an “exit interview” with HR about their time at the company. Although that concept doesn’t exist for Broadway performers, we think it’s fun to check in with stars as they finish up a successful run. Matthew James Thomas will say farewell to his corner of the sky on March 30, when he departs the Tony-winning, circus-inspired revival of Pippin. As he leaves the big top behind, Thomas reflects on his “transformative, isolating and inspiring” year on Broadway. Star Files Pippin How do you feel now that you’re leaving? Excited, sad (of course) and like I’ve grown a few extra backbones. What will you miss most about the job? This life, so far, has left me with rather severe nostalgia. That feeling of the deep bone grind, that impossible last performance of the week when you already gave everything you had at the matinee performance and somehow you know you will find it again, from absolutely nowhere, because you have to…it’s the rules…your rules. I will deeply miss the audience as I have never really felt such a deep and intuitive connection with them. I’m the luckiest guy alive to share in the responsibility of a production. It is what I live for. I hope to “find it” again someday, and of course have no certainty. Pippin is an incredibly smart piece of work, and this version of the show, in particular, truly serves to carve out the most important statements that it makes. It will hurt to be away from such a profound piece of theater made up of such an inspirational, superhuman cast and crew. What advice would you give to future employees in your job position? Eat lots of protein… Love and listen as hard as you can. What was the hardest thing? The physical and mental exhaustion—and always being the guy saying, “Sorry, I can’t come out tonight.” What was the easiest thing about the job? Listening to it and working with some truly incredible people. I’d start naming names but I’d be here forever. Falling into the show in ways I would have never predicted. Every day was a new challenge. View Comments What was the highlight of your time at this job? Those moments in live theater when everything comes into alignment and when every element (including the audience) comes into an effortless being with each other. What skills do you think are required for future job applicants? One of the hardest things I’ve encountered whilst working on Pippin is the consistent irony, as a reflection from the core material of the show, within my own life. However, I learned a lot along the way, so I would say whatever you have to offer, whoever you are… Yeah, do that.center_img How do you think you’ve grown during your time at this job? Like a beanstalk—well at least it feels that way. I’m grateful most of all for the experience, the everyday and the accumulation of it all. To me it feels like the greatest gift of living. Why are you leaving? It’s just time. I need to regroup with my family and I sure would like to see my girlfriend [fellow Spider-Man alum Jennifer Damiano] some more. Also, I can’t live with the idea of the experience or my performance getting stale. I feel like I have given everything I had, to every single show, and I wouldn’t want it to be any other way. So I try to trust my instincts—I always find myself wanting to take risks and make myself available for new challenges and to give everything I have to the work that I’m doing, when I’m doing it. Job You’re Leaving: Pippin in Pippin Related Shows Employee name: Matthew James Thomas What are three words you would use to describe your experience at the job? Transformative. Isolating. Inspiring. How did you feel when you first got the job? Thrilled, nervous and ready. Show Closed This production ended its run on Jan. 4, 2015 Matthew James Thomaslast_img read more

Cricket News Who Is CM Gautam, The Biggest Name Caught In the Karnataka Premier League Spot-Fixing Scandal?

first_imgNew Delhi: The Karnataka Premier League match fixing and spot fixing scandal has gotten bigger and the arrest of two players in CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi has sent shockwaves in Karnataka’s cricketing fraternity. The arrest of CM Gautam, in particular, is massive considering the amount of experience and contributions that he has done for Karnataka cricket during their glory days. The arrest has come during the 2019 Karnataka Premier League in which they have been accused of involvement in match-fixing in the final between Bellary Tuskers, also known as Ballari Tuskers and Hubli Tigers. Both have been accused of accepting Rs 20 lakh each for slow batting. The charges on Gautam, who has been included in the Goa side for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is significant due to his experience in the domestic circuit. Known as Chidhambaram Muralidharen Gautam, he was born in Bangalore and made his First Class debut in 2008 for Karnataka against Uttar Pradesh. As a wicketkeeper, he was solid and filled up the void left by long-serving Karnataka keeper Thilak Naidu admirably. However, in 2012/13, he achieved his breakthrough year in domestic cricket. His contributions with the bat helped Karnataka go the distancen in the 2012/13 season. His 257 against Vidarbha and his 264 against Maharashtra was the pinnacle of his batting performances. Apart from big scores, Gautam showed that he could modify his approach to batting when the situation demanded. Against Tamil Nadu, he smashed 130 and scored 71 in a tense game against Delhi to help Karnataka win despite conceding a first innings lead. His 943 runs in the 2012/13 season at an average of 117 helped Karnataka achieve the double treble of winning the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare and Irani trophy in two consecutive seasons. His performances in the Ranji Trophy helped him get a spot in the India A side for the series against Australia in 2013. Even in the Indian Premier League, he has been part of three teams, being selected for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. He did not get a chance with RCB and had relative success in Delhi and Mumbai. Also Read | KPL Match-Fixing case: Ballari Tuskers Players Abrar Kazi, CM Gautam ArrestedIn 94 games, he had smashed 4716 runs at an average of 41 with 10 centuries and 24 fifties. In the 2019 seasons, after a decade with Karnataka, Gautam shifted to Goa where he struggled. In the KPL, he smashed 92* and 96 against Mysuru Warriors and Belagavi Panthers before his knock of 29 in the final against Hubli Tigers of 29 balls got him in the spotlight for slow batting. With so much experience, this arrest in the ongoing Karnataka Premier League comes as a body blow to his career. Jamaica to repeal outdated laws

first_imgThe Jamaican government is moving to repeal outdated laws in a major push to impose tougher fines and penalties for breaches.Justice Minister Delroy Chuck disclosed that the Legal Reform Department of the Justice Ministry is reviewing more than 800 laws as part of the overhaul.  “Members will recall that there was a certain person from St. Catherine, who when he had (an) immigration charge and was convicted for an immigration offence, he was only charged J$100 because that was the maximum penalty,” Chuck recalled.  “What the legal reform of the Parliament has done, members, is to take these, all the laws of Jamaica, 850 that had penalties in them, we’re putting 14 matrices for the ministries. So every ministry have will now have to look at the penalties that now exist…and to make recommendations as to what the penalty should be,” he revealed. Chuck, who made the announcement in Parliament on Tuesday, said the move will begin in his ministry with the hope that “other ministries will follow suit.” He added that the new legislation will be tabled in Parliament this fiscal year.last_img read more

New Orlando Stadium complete

first_imgThe surrounding communities have benefited from the upgrades too, with well-lit footways from Orlando and Mlamlankunzi stations improving safety and security for commuters and over 2 200 jobs were created with skills in carpentry, bricklaying, plastering and painting being transferred. Construction at Johannesburg’s Orlando Stadium, to be used as a training venue during the 2010 Fifa World Cup, has been completed. The R280-million revamp of the stadium, which began in May 2006, involved kitting out the multi-functional facility with hospitality facilities that can accommodate 120 suites, conference facilities, a gymnasium, fan shop, offices and security facilities. The seating capacity has been increased from 24 000 to over 40 000, and the stadium will be now able to cater to cater to both soccer and rugby matches, as well as community gatherings and music concerts. The new stadium gets its first taste of football action on Saturday, when home team Orlando Pirates play Thanda Royal Zulu in a Premier Soccer League match. This will be followed by Moroka Swallows versus Platinum Stars on Sunday, and locals Kaiser Chiefs against Golden Arrows on 26 November. Community benefits The Johannesburg municipality hopes that Orlando Stadium will in the future represent a change in Soweto’s skyline that will be seen as a reference point for all tourists and soccer lovers. Executive director of the city’s 2010 unit, Sibongile Mazibuko, told reporters that they had been working with the South African Police Service, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the city’s disaster management unit to ensure that the weekends PSL games were safe, manageable and enjoyable to all.center_img “When the soccer spectacle has come and gone, there must be something of value that is there for all to see and point at,” Johannesburg council chairperson Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said this week. 20 November 2008 “We will not be filling the stadium to its capacity of 40 000, but will only be allowing about 30 000 spectators due to the fact that this will be the first test for the stadium,” said Mazibuko. Verizon iPhone Expected Today

first_imgWhat it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement sarah perez Ouch!CDMA iPhone Confirmed?Notably, AT&T’s above statement not only confirms the existence of the Verizon iPhone itself, but also its technical nature: CDMA, not LTE.?For those unfamiliar with the acronyms, CDMA is Verizon’s equivalent of 3G while LTE is 4G. (Although the term “4G” has been transformed into marketing lingo for “next generation, high speed networks” – none of the U.S.’s “4G” networks actually meet the standards requirements). That’s an interesting detail about the Verizon iPhone because, last week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2011) in Las Vegas, Verizon announced a slew of LTE-capable phones, all of which were running Google’s Android mobile operating system. It appears that the choice Verizon will be presenting its smartphone shoppers is this: do you want a Verizon iPhone, or a 4G Android? Arguably, the supposed lack of 4G technology in the iPhone could make that a tougher decision for those who know and care about network speeds. However, that may not include most mainstream consumers.According to Elisabeth Rainge, an analyst at IDC, “regular consumers think more about the handset than the network.” She wondered: “if they build LTE, will they come?”Nielsen’s latest survey revealed that same sentiment was found among many U.S. adults. The firm asked more than 2,100 U.S. adults about 4G technology to gauge consumer awareness and perceptions, as well as purchase intent. The results showed that while 83% were aware of 4G, half said they did not understand it. And 71% reported they were not planning on buying a 4G device within the next 12 months. Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Related Posts center_img How Many AT&T Defectors?Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray told NYT that Verizon could activate as many as 9 million iPhones this year, or as much as 40% of its total smartphone sales for the year. He said that up to 6.5 million of those could be from AT&T.Meanwhile, Credit Suisse estimates that AT&T will have 18.4 million iPhone subscribers in 2010, of which 15.9 million (86%) will be under contract, according to The Wall St. Journal. And analyst Jonathan Chaplin estimates that Verizon will sign up 9.6 million subscribers through 2012, 1.3 million of which will be from AT&T.The discrepancy in the numbers show that not even analysts are sure of the effect this move will have on the subscriber bases of the two networks, only that there will be one. The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology This morning, live from New York City’s Lincoln Center, Verizon Wireless is holding a special press event where it’s expected the company will reveal, at long last, the Verizon iPhone. It’s a move that will end AT&T’s exclusivity over the wildly popular Apple smartphone once and for all.The event is being hosted by Lowell McAdam, Verizon President and COO, and will likely see Apple CEO Steve Jobs grace the stage as well.AT&T has been prepping for the loss of its exclusive rights to carry the iconic device by slashing prices on the iPhone 3GS, lowering it to just $49, obviously in the hopes of roping people into a cellular contract in advance of Verizon’s announcement.AT&T & Verizon Trading BarbsAT&T, which has been the only carrier with the iPhone for three-and-a-half years in the U.S., has even started to publicly dismiss the Verizon version of the phone. For example, AT&T PR spokesperson Larry Solomon sent Business Insider the following statement yesterday:“The iPhone is built for speed, but that’s not what you get with a CDMA phone. I’m not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane.”He also explained that AT&T’s GSM technology is faster than Verizon’s CDMA technology. That same exact wording was released by AT&T Mark Siegel in a statement given to The New York Times.Verizon then fought back, releasing a statement of its own:“AT&T is known for a lot of things, but network quality is not one of them,” said Jeffrey Nelson, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless. “Typically companies try to call attention to their strongest suit.” Tags:#Apple#mobile#news#web last_img read more
