Richel Hogenkamp in the third round (Souce: Reuters) Top News Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep advanced to the third round of the US Open with a 6-3 6-4 win over Lucie Safarova on Thursday in the first full match played under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium The $150 million retractable roof was installed ahead of this year’s tournament and guaranteed there would be at least some action on a muggy and overcast Day Four at the year’s final grand slam “It was a little bit (of an adjustment)” Halep said about playing under the roof “But I had the chance to warm up in the morning before the match “I don’t want to say anything bad because it wasn’t bad Had a nice feeling “It was a great experience to be there I didn’t have to wait for the rain so that’s a good thing” The roof which has been a huge source of fascination for the Flushing Meadows crowds was first used on Wednesday when it was put into action in the middle of Rafa Nadal’s second-round victory over Andreas Seppi On a midweek morning session with the roof closed and a sparse crowd sprinkled through the massive stadium Arthur Ashe had a vacuous sterile atmosphere But more importantly with rain delaying action on the other courts play went ahead as scheduled on the main court where Halep needed 88 minutes to dismiss an error-prone Safarova a two-time grand slam doubles champion who committed a whopping 44 unforced errors Safarova who last year reached a career-high number five in the world rankings represented a tricky second round test for Halep who wildly flailed her racquet during a first set temper tantrum at 3-3 before going on to break the Czech “I lost a little bit the rhythm” explained Halep “But in the important moments I found the rhythm I found the way that I have to hit “Always it’s a good match against her Gives me confidence that I can beat her” Halep will play either Hungary’s Timea Babos or Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands in the third round For all the latest Sports News download these areas had to be suspended Delhi water minister Kapil Mishra said Operations at the plants had to be suspended this morning due to leakage in the carrier lined channel (CLC) that brings water from Haryana to Delhi The situation will take at least a day to improve he said Watch What Else Is Making News As it is being repaired water supply in the CLC has been diverted to the Yamuna river the water of which is extremely contaminated with levels of ammonia ranging between 35 ppm and 4 ppm It cannot be treated with agents like chlorine as after coming in contact with ammonia it will produce trihalomethane which is carcinogenic in nature Mishra told PTI that the ammonia treatment plant that was inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last year cannot treat anything beyond 1-2 pm Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has also asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to check the quality of raw water samples “CLC is leaked in Haryana We get raw water through CLC Haryana is repairing it so we need to shut CLC Now water coming through main river course where ammonia is dangerously high So production from two plants stopped temporarily” Mishra said in a series of tweets “No compromise on water quality Supply to be affected for one day in areas covered by Chandrawal and Wazirabad plants I am personally monitoring the situation and we are in constant touch with authorities in will have teams of veterinarians and local volunteers on motorbikes traversing the city along designated `tracks’ and clicking pictures over the next five weeks Armed with digital cameras and smartphones seven teams will track strays for the survey commencing Tuesday The survey is being carried out by Humane Society International an NGO working for animal welfare on behalf of the civic body This year smartphone applications will replace the traditional method of noting down the number of stray dogs spotted on paper without providing exact locations or photographs Using the Google Maps app the NGO has created 25 to 30-km tracks of streets in each ward for their ‘strip transact’ method of population estimation Starting 6 am the teams will record strays along their designated ‘tracks’ Using the GPS-enabled OSM (OpenStreetMap) Tracker app the team will record each dog spotted and place them in categories such as male notched (operated upon) or unnotched female notched or unnotched female lactating and pups by a simple click of an icon on their smartphones “These apps make the survey more error-free This method is quicker than noting down the type on paper With the GPS we can record the exact location of the dog” said Lex Hiby a population biologist from the UK who is advising the NGO in this survey Information such as the number of lactating females will help the team know about the timeline of the breeding season With a software modified by Hiby the number of dogs will be calculated using the Lincoln-Peterson Index a formula used for population estimation The same area will be surveyed again for the next three days from 6 am to 9 am to reduce the error margin “In a vast city like Mumbai it is impossible to count all the dogs We can only track dogs during the morning hours when the traffic is the least” said Dr Amit Chaudhari team leader of the survey “Travelling by bike helps us also track dogs that may try to run away” This estimation report will also include information about the number of dogs per km and have a baseline protocol by saving the tracks for future monitoring programmes Post the morning session a team led by Hiby will click photos of stray dogs with distinct features such as long hair or tails with a distinct white marking Over the next two-three days the team will try and ‘re-spot’ the dogs a method that will provide information about visibility of dogs in an area and the population density “Just population estimation doesn’t provide useful information so we will provide dog density as well This information is more relevant to residents as well as monitoring agencies as it helps in knowing whether the number has gone up or down in the area when checked again” added Hiby This ‘shoot and record’ method has replaced the otherwise-accepted method of painting dogs during a survey Dr Chaudhari said in a congested city like Mumbai it could be hard to carry a big spraying machine The BMC has allotted Rs 9 lakh for the survey according to an official “This survey will help us in planning future animal birth control programmes and assess the effectiveness of sterilisation and vaccination programmes” said
